The Cummins Advanced Medium Mobile Power Sources (AMMPS) unit will be front and center at the 2018 AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) will display the AMMPS generator sets during AUSA 2018. Cummins was recently awarded a $490.9 million contract to produce the diesel powered generators for the United States Department of Defense through 2023. In addition to the AMMPS generator sets, the Advanced Combat Engine (ACE) project and V903 Engine will be on display, each technology is or will be used by the Department of Defense.

The new AMMPS units will save the Department of Defense $432 million through energy and fuel efficiencies, as the AMMPS units are 21 percent more fuel efficient, 35 percent quieter, and 40 percent more reliable thank the previous fleet of Tactical Quiet Generators (TQGs).

"The increased efficiency and less need for fuel, means reduced costs," said Regina Barringer, Cummins Global Manager of Rail and Defense. "Most importantly it significantly increases the safety of troops in combat, because fewer fuel transport runs are required."

The ACE project is an opposed-piston diesel engine, working on a two-stroke combustion cycle eliminating the need for a valvetrain. ACE is projected to deliver a 21 percent reduction in thermal rejection. This is a 50 percent increase in power density and a 13 percent increase in fuel efficiency over engines currently in use. The ACE is scheduled to be tested by the U.S. Army in 2019.

The V903 was first used in the Bradley Fighting Vehicle in 1981 to upgrade the power level of the commercial truck engine from 350 horsepower to 500 horsepower. In 2013, the V903 was re-engineered to produce 675 horsepower for the U.S. Army's Paladin M109A7 howitzer. Currently, the V903 is being fitted in the upgraded Bradley ECP 2 and Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicles (AMPV), replacing the M113 armored personnel carrier.
