Cummins announces availability of X12™ with Autocar

Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) is pleased to announce that starting in the fourth quarter of 2018, Autocar – an American manufacturer of severe-duty, cab-over-engine vocational trucks, will introduce the X12 in their ACX® model.

Columbus, Ind.

Key Points

  • The Cummins X12 delivers up to 500 horsepower and has the highest power-to-weight ration of any comparable engine in the market
  • The X12 uses the latest Single Module aftertreatment system, taking up to 60 percent less space than prior aftertreatment configurations

“With its best-in-class power-to-weight ratio, Cummins believes that the X12 engine will be well suited to address the needs of the refuse market as well as other weight sensitive vocational applications,” said Brett Merrit, Vice President – Cummins On-Highway Engine Business.

“Autocar is a key player in the North America refuse market and this introduction will further our current collaboration across diesel and natural gas platforms.”

To meet customer needs, the Cummins X12 boasts a remarkably low engine weight of 2,050 pounds that doesn't compromise on durability or performance. Delivering up to 500 horsepower (373 kW), the X12 has the highest power-to-weight ratio of any comparable engine in the market. Haulers specifically with the Autocar ACX powered by the X12 engine will see a significant weight savings of 733 pounds versus Cummins' previous 12-liter engine. That's 733 pounds more payload available.

"Autocar is focused on bringing innovations to the market with real, tangible benefits to our customers," said Jim Johnston, President of Autocar. "This new engine puts more cash in our customers' pockets, plain and simple. We're gratified that Cummins trusts us to bring the X12 engine to the refuse market first."

The X12 uses the latest Single Module™ aftertreatment system, which takes up to 60 percent less space and weighs up to 40 percent less than prior aftertreatment configurations.

Combined engine and aftertreatment weight for the X12 is around 2,240 pounds – considerably lower than that of any other heavy-duty system.

“Built around improved uptime and reliability, the X12 will be in prime position to support Autocar’s vision of ‘Always Up®.’” Merritt.

The X12 will be available in Autocar’s ACX starting in the fourth quarter of 2018.
