Cummins' Engine Business celebrates this year’s achievements as it looks ahead to do more in 2024

2023 has proven to be another exciting year for Cummins Inc. and its Engine Business Unit (EBU) team with the numerous milestones and product launches announced throughout the year. EBU is the core of the company's five business segments which designs and manufactures state-of-the-art diesel, natural gas and other engines for on-highway and off-highway use.

There’s no question EBU employees take pride in living the brand’s promise of innovation and dependability in everything it does, ensuring continued trust and confidence for Cummins’ vast array of customers while delivering nearly 1.2 million advanced engines each year.

As the year comes to a close and 2024 is about to embark, it's only fitting to reflect on some of what EBU has done this year and how it has prepared for what is yet to come. From milestone production achievements at its engine plants to new partnerships and acquisitions, here are just a few of the memorable highlights EBU brought to the world in 2023:

  • X10 fuel agnostic engine launch: Kicking off the year, Cummins announced its new X10 engine launching in North America in 2026. Next in Cummins fuel-agnostic engine series, the X10 is uniquely positioned to serve both medium and heavy-duty applications, and plays an important role serving customer needs. Though the engine will first be available in Europe and North America, other regions will follow making the X10 available in additional off-highway markets as well. Learn more about the X10
  • Historic $1 billion investment in the EBU manufacturing network: In April, Cummins announced investments of more than $1 billion across its U.S. engine manufacturing network in Indiana, New York and North Carolina. The investment will provide upgrades to those facilities in support of the industry’s first fuel agnostic engine platforms that will run on low carbon fuels, including natural gas, diesel and, eventually, hydrogen, helping decarbonize the nation’s truck fleets. The added financial investment is reflective of Cummins’ dual path approach of advancing both engine-based and lower-emission solutions, an approach in support of Cummins’ stakeholders and Cummins’ impact on the planet. Read more about Cummins’ investment plans.
  • Telling the story of the Next Generation X15 in a three-part video series: Next in the Cummins fuel-agnostic 15-liter platform is the introduction of the advanced clean diesel Next Generation X15, demonstrating the company’s continued commitment to evolving internal combustion technology. Featuring improved greenhouse gas efficiency and fuel economy, built upon Cummins’ uptime legacy, the X15 includes advanced telematics throughout the system to enable faster diagnostics which aid in planning and streamlining future maintenance and service needs. Take a look at the beginning of the X15 story and its evolution.
  • Predictive Service Insights of North America on-highway application offering: In late summer, Cummins released a new predictive model for the X15 heavy-duty engine, which provides customers with a Predictive Service Insight up to 90 days ahead of potential failures of their diesel particulate filter (DPF) differential pressure (DP) sensor. This allows users to proactively schedule a replacement, avoiding unnecessary downtime. Learn more about how Predictive Service Insights works.

And there's much more underway at Cummins. As the world's largest independent engine manufacturer continues its journey to be a leading global powertrain supplier, Cummins focuses on: leading in critical technologies, engaging with market-leading customers and partners, generating and maintaining economies of scale; and improving its leadership culture. These priorities, along with living its brand promise of innovation and dependability in everything Cummins does, ensures continued trust and confidence from customers and helps support the Cummins legacy of being a global power leader known for its products' reliability and durability.

Los Custompaks de Cummins se utilizan para la gestión del agua mientras Tailandia lucha con su crisis de agua

Water crisis

Sixty Cummins Inc. CustomPaks are in service in Thailand as part of a critical water management plan aimed at easing the country’s water crisis – a crisis that has caused enormous economic and social damage and stirred conflict among communities.

En las últimas décadas, Tailandia ha enfrentado continuamente problemas de agua causados por una grave sequía. Water reserves in dams and reservoirs are insufficient while water resources are often contaminated with toxins caused by urban communities and the industrial and agricultural sectors.

Severe flooding is a threat, too, at a time when the realities of climate change are hanging over the country.

As a result, the allocation of precious water resources, which must be shared among various stakeholders including new and existing industry, large and small agriculture, and cities and villages has become a flashpoint.

Kittithanapat Engineering Co. (KTP), has been involved in the water management system since 1996, working closely with authorities such as the Royal Irrigation Department, Department of Water Resources, Bangkok Metropolitan Authority and others.

To help KTP meet its often urgent requirements, Cummins DKSH (Thailand) has recently supplied 60 Australian-built CustomPaks - 45 powered by Cummins' X15 engine rated at 600 hp, and 15 powered by the QSL9 rated at 325 hp. These fully self-contained powerpacks are emissions certified to Tier 3.

The CustomPaks are coupled to hydraulically-driven, large-volume submersible water pumps sourced by KTP from US company Moving Water Industries (MWI); KTP is the exclusive distributor in Thailand for these MWI Hydroflo pumps.

Prior to Cummins’ involvement, KTP was using another diesel engine brand but service support wasn’t up to the standard required.

Long-serving KTP engineer Kittisak Thanasoot says Cummins DKSH’s reputation for technical and aftersales support along with the reliability of the Cummins product were a key reason behind KTP’s decision to specify the CustomPaks for the Royal Irrigation Department.

The ability of Cummins DKSH to respond to short delivery times was also important.

“Supplying large quantities of high horsepower diesel engines for emergency situations such as flash flooding can be a challenge for KTP,” says Kittisak Thanasoot.

“Responding to the needs of the government agencies to manage such problems in a timely manner and with least impact on communities, KTP has found the answer in our partnership with Cummins DKSH.”
