What is remote diagnostics?

Remote diagnostics leverages the information gathered from the continuous monitoring of a vehicle and promptly identifies and reports potential issues. Cummins Inc.'s remote diagnostics solutions utilize the power of telematics to constantly analyze data.

It creates valuable insights into the health and performance of your Cummins-powered equipment. Remote diagnostics provides customers with the most current engine data, allowing you to make the most proactive decisions on maintenance.

How does remote diagnostics work in trucks and buses?

Embedded within a truck or bus's engine, Cummins' remote diagnostics solutions employ advanced telematics technology to continually observe critical engine parameters. It functions seamlessly, consistently monitoring more than 400 parameters on the engine. While customers can continue to receive traditional diagnostic services in person at service locations, remote diagnostics can digitally transmit real-time data, reducing unplanned downtime and costs.

This critical information is then communicated back to the customer in real-time and provides insights into the problem, its severity, probable causes and potential fixes. Cummins is constantly monitoring and receiving data to evaluate the health and performance of every vehicle and engine in a customer's fleet - whether it's ten or thousands of engines. While insights are gathered for every vehicle, including the healthy ones, Cummins will only notify customers of the critical few that require attention.

For example, a customer with 5000 vehicles in their fleet may only receive notifications for 100 of their vehicles, as the remaining 4900's data was evaluated and all came back with no issues. Cummins remote monitoring technology maintains a high level of accuracy across every vehicle in a customer's fleet, not simply the ones with potential issues.

While Cummins can deliver these insights to a customer via email or web portal, we also can integrate insights into your preferred system to manage the entire vehicle. Customers can, therefore, receive real-time alerts in the way that works best for them.

Alerts and insights received the way a customer wants allow them to take action to ensure optimal engine performance and longevity. Alerts indicate the severity level of faults and show suggested time to act. Customers not only are able to adequately address the issue but also plan for repairs when and how it works best for them. This means minimal disruptions to operations.

Why remote diagnostics are vital for customers

There are many benefits of remote diagnostics for customers. It enhances the effectiveness and dependability of operations for the driver and the business. Paired with prognostics, which detects potential issues before they occur, drivers can have peace of mind knowing that engine performance is being monitored in real-time. This can help drivers avoid downtime and potentially dangerous situations. Not only does this enhance driver safety, but it also contributes to a smoother, more efficient trip.

For customers' businesses, remote diagnostics offer a wealth of actionable insights into each vehicle's status. Real-time fault code notifications and repair instructions can dramatically reduce downtime and repair costs. By providing a clear view of engine health across an entire fleet, it enables data-driven strategies that can significantly extend vehicle lifespans and improve overall performance. Cummins' remote diagnostics solutions can drive operational efficiency and save money.

Water crisis

Sixty Cummins Inc. CustomPaks are in service in Thailand as part of a critical water management plan aimed at easing the country’s water crisis – a crisis that has caused enormous economic and social damage and stirred conflict among communities.

En las últimas décadas, Tailandia ha enfrentado continuamente problemas de agua causados por una grave sequía. Water reserves in dams and reservoirs are insufficient while water resources are often contaminated with toxins caused by urban communities and the industrial and agricultural sectors.

Severe flooding is a threat, too, at a time when the realities of climate change are hanging over the country.

As a result, the allocation of precious water resources, which must be shared among various stakeholders including new and existing industry, large and small agriculture, and cities and villages has become a flashpoint.

Kittithanapat Engineering Co. (KTP), has been involved in the water management system since 1996, working closely with authorities such as the Royal Irrigation Department, Department of Water Resources, Bangkok Metropolitan Authority and others.

600 hp CustomPaks

To help KTP meet its often urgent requirements, Cummins DKSH (Thailand) has recently supplied 60 Australian-built CustomPaks - 45 powered by Cummins' X15 engine rated at 600 hp, and 15 powered by the QSL9 rated at 325 hp. These fully self-contained powerpacks are emissions certified to Tier 3.

The CustomPaks are coupled to hydraulically-driven, large-volume submersible water pumps sourced by KTP from US company Moving Water Industries (MWI); KTP is the exclusive distributor in Thailand for these MWI Hydroflo pumps.

Prior to Cummins’ involvement, KTP was using another diesel engine brand but service support wasn’t up to the standard required.

Long-serving KTP engineer Kittisak Thanasoot says Cummins DKSH’s reputation for technical and aftersales support along with the reliability of the Cummins product were a key reason behind KTP’s decision to specify the CustomPaks for the Royal Irrigation Department.

The ability of Cummins DKSH to respond to short delivery times was also important.

“Supplying large quantities of high horsepower diesel engines for emergency situations such as flash flooding can be a challenge for KTP,” says Kittisak Thanasoot.

“Responding to the needs of the government agencies to manage such problems in a timely manner and with least impact on communities, KTP has found the answer in our partnership with Cummins DKSH.”
