At Bauma 2016 in Munich, Cummins unveiled its new generation of ultra-low emissions engines spanning 100 to 430 hp (75-321 kW) designed to meet the 2019 EU Stage V emissions regulations with simpler, EGR-free (exhaust gas recirculation) architecture. This lineup of engines improves fuel efficiency and our new Single Module aftertreatment technology saves up to 50 percent envelope space, delivering exciting new options for European equipment manufacturers.

This announcement continues the Cummins legacy of going beyond global emission standards to improve performance for our customers around the world. Each of these new engines sets a new benchmark in its class with unprecedented performance, transforming the productivity of equipment for Stage V applications.

Meet Cummins Stage V

Cummins Stage V F3.8, B4.5, B6.7 and L9 engines represent a leap ahead of their Stage IV equivalents, with 10 percent more power and almost 20 percent more torque averaged across the range. By removing EGR, we realized the full potential of Stage V engines without the need to increase displacement. The resulting reduction in cooling requirements helps lower the cost of OEM integration.

Additionally, Stage V improvements to fuel efficiency will result in a 3 percent average reduction in overall fluid costs compared to Stage IV.

The engine operating costs will be further reduced with an achievable 1,000-hour oil change interval, twice as long as the current 500 hours.

These advances are made possible by cutting-edge Cummins technology, including the new Cummins Single Module for Stage V.

Single Module Advantage

The Cummins Single Module brings innovative exhaust aftertreatment for our Stage V solutions. It combines DPF, SCR and urea-dosing technologies in one module, reducing the envelope size by up to 50 percent and offering 30 percent reduction in weight compared with Stage IV exhaust aftertreatment.

The Single Module is essentially a fit-and-forget system, capable of removing emissions almost entirely by passive regeneration, with no impact on equipment operation and requiring minimal operator intervention. This extends the service-cleaning interval significantly beyond the 5,000 hours of today's systems. With its modular design, the Single Module allows for varying diameters and lengths to efficiently match catalyst capacity to the power output of the engine.

Connected by Cummins

Aftertreatment is critical, but Cummins Stage V engines also bring smarter electronics with Start-Stop engine technology embedded within the management system, offering the potential to realize fuel savings of 5 to 15 percent corresponding to the amount of equipment idle time.

Wireless connectivity will also be integral to Cummins Stage V, ready to deliver instant engine diagnostics over the air so operators can maximize uptime availability of their equipment. Cummins Connected Diagnostics is the simplest way for drivers, technicians and fleet managers to ensure maximum performance.

Universal Engines

Each new technology brings our OEMs closer to the goal of a universal engine platform. Since Cummins Stage V engines offer an inherently high degree of tolerance to sulfur in fuel - up to 5,000 parts per million - we offer OEMs the prospect of using the same Cummins Stage V engine in equipment worldwide, making it simpler to comply with multiple emissions regulations.

While meeting the more stringent Stage V regulations in 2019, the new engines will also be co-certified to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 Final and equivalent emissions regulations in Canada, Japan and South Korea. That will make available the benefits of the EGR-free engines to help OEMs reduce the complexity involved with powering their global equipment platforms.
