Celebrating Black History Month - The Importance of an Inclusive Workplace

""

Black History Month is a time for recognizing the central role of African-Americans in U.S. history, for Cummins, it is also about highlighting the significance of diversity and inclusion. In honor of Black History Month, we've invited employees to share their personal stories, helping others to understand what this month represents, as well as the importance of an inclusive workplace year round.

Employee Highlight: Jasmine O’Conner, Shows & Event Management Specialist / Marketing

Years at Cummins: 3

"To be honorable and greatly revered is what Black History Month means to me. It means glorifying the accomplishments of those African-Americans before me, and understanding the essential role of blacks throughout our U.S. history. It means remembering the lives of those who struggled and triumphed in order to make a way for me. Black History Month encourages me to have the ambition and drive to someday be a pioneer and more to the generations succeeding me."

Understanding the value of diversity inside Cummins...

"The value of diversity inside my job at Cummins is priceless. I work with men and women of different ages, ethnicities, backgrounds, and much more. Having the opportunity to work with various groups of people has allowed me to grow in my personal and professional life. The value of diversity inside Cummins is immeasurable. I am thankful and grateful that diversity is valued inside my job today."

Feeling pride working within an inclusive environment...

"What makes me proud about being a part of our inclusive environment at Cummins, is the fact that inclusiveness extends beyond our jobs and into our communities. I have experienced this while joining in Cummins' participation in the Indiana Black Expo (IBE). Here, we have the opportunity to develop community partnerships, introduce parents and children to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, and recruit top talent while highlighting our brand and our products. IBE is another way Cummins brings individuals together who may not otherwise have a chance to work, learn and grow with one another."

Living your values at Cummins...

"Since Cummins and I share some of the same values, I can live my values at all times. One of our shared values is integrity. Right is right and wrong is wrong. I believe that my word is my bond. There is not one thing and/or person that is below me, so I always keep an open mind and treat others the way I would want to be treated. I was taught that I have to be the change that I want to see in the world. This change starts with me through helping others achieve the change they want to see."
