Celebrating Black History Month - Fostering Acceptance in Global Markets

""

Black History Month is a time for recognizing the central role of African-Americans in U.S. history, for Cummins, it is also about highlighting the significance of diversity and inclusion. In honor of Black History Month, we've invited employees to share their personal stories, helping others to understand what this month represents, as well as the importance of an inclusive workplace year round.

Employee Highlight: Frank Griffin, Business Development Leader

Years at Cummins: 10

"Black History Month is an opportunity to share and highlight American history that was created and forged by African-Americans.  It's an opportunity to appreciate all the contributions that have been provided by African-Americans. Black History Month is an occasion to realize, even inside of difficult situations and unfair conditions, African Americans contributed tremendously to the success of this country.

Black History Month is a time to tell the rest of the story that is sometimes not highlighted within our schools and to further educate our youth on the significance of black history.”

Understanding the value of diversity inside Cummins…

"The true value of diversity goes beyond visible skin color. It also includes the invisible differences and attributes we all can bring to the job.

Those differences are what makes us better as a group than as separate individuals.  Those differences provide the creativity and innovation a global company like Cummins must have to compete and excel."

Feeling pride working within an inclusive environment…

"During my career at Cummins, I have worked in the oil and gas industry. Within major oil and gas regions of North America (Texas through Alberta, Canada), there is very little visibility of diversity and inclusion across the market. My customer facing role at Cummins has allowed me to collaborate with others and work towards fostering acceptance and inclusiveness in this homogenous environment. Making a difference within a market that historically lacked diversity is something I am proud of."

Living your values at Cummins…

"Cummins has a culture that values diversity, seeks to grow in diversity, and accepts the differences that come from tapping into a global pool of resources. This culture began with J Irwin Miller, who was a visionary beyond his time and environment. Fortunately, this culture is still prevalent today. Therefore my values are accepted and appreciated at Cummins, even though they might not be a part of the majority.
