- More than 70 years of experience in the rail market
- Over 13,000 Cummins rail engines in operation
Wherever there's advanced rail technology, you'll find Cummins power. Under the floor on Europe's high speed passenger trains, or fitted on 20 ton grinders in the Far East, Cummins is on track with the most progressive rail companies in the world.
Cummins new railcar engines utilise low profile designs for use under the car floor, with access to service points from underneath the engine - not inside the passenger compartment. Reliable Cummins products designed for high load/hour operation across all rail applications with continued investment to comply to latest emission regulations.
Cummins has a wealth of experience in this industry. Recognising the unique modes of operation of rail equipment, Cummins can provide dependable power and aftermarket support for new and repower projects in high speed railcars, locomotives and track maintenance vehicles.
From the very first time you use your Cummins-powered equipment, Cummins provide an extensive range of products and services designed to meet the needs of your engine throughout its working life. Cummins continue to invest in innovation to reduce life cycle costs.

CECX1919 - Cummins QSK95-powered locomotive
The locomotive, which is owned by Cummins, completed its first full year of operation in March 2017, logging about 3,800 hours as it pulled coal and mixed freight over the Indiana Rail Road’s 500 miles of track south and southwest of Indianapolis, Indiana (U.S.A).
The 95-litre, 16-cylinder engine is one of the most powerful high-speed diesels to be installed in a locomotive. Cummins purchased and re-powered a 40-year-old locomotive to demonstrate that the QSK95 could pull freight efficiently.
One of the first things the Cummins' locomotive demonstrated is that a QSK95 with Cummins' SCR exhaust aftertreatment could comfortably fit in an older locomotive. The SCR system removes NOx emissions while the engine combustion removes PM, two critical air pollutants.

Replacement Engines
Replacement Engines
When an engine reaches the end of its operating life, Cummins offers various options to keep the rail application operating with Cummins power. One option is to replace the engine with either:
- A New Cummins Engine: that complies with the latest emission regulations, updates your rail application with a Cummins engine that included the latest technology available.
- A Cummins Reconditioned Engine (ReCon®): Cummins offers a full range of reconditioned (ReCon) engines up to 19L displacement.
Cummins ReCon Engines
A Cummins ReCon engine is remanufactured to new engine specifications. The Cummins ReCon engine is a premium product, carefully remanufactured under factory conditions at Cummins Diesel ReCon facility at Cumbernauld, UK.
Major engine remanufacture consists of the following three phases:
- Teardown, cleaning, component qualification and inspection
- Component sub-assembly and engine assembly
- Dyno testing, final ‘dress’ and painting, along with final inspection

Repowering Rail Applications
Repowers offer a great opportunity for rail operators and fleet owners to replace existing or obsolete engines but keep the train carriages or track machinery equipment. Cummins provides a full range of new repowered engines, specific for a variety of rail applications. Cummins experienced aftermarket and engineering teams can provide rail operators and fleet owners with a complete and comprehensive repower package that maximises the life cycle of the equipment while meeting present and future emissions regulations.
Rail Engine Overhauls
Cummins offers various overhaul options tailored to customer requirements. Trained and qualified technicians, using the latest tools and following a Cummins defined work process, execute the overhaul and repairs. After reassembling, the engines are fully tested, confirming performance specifically for the Rail market.
Mid Life Overhaul is tailored to customer requirement for example bring unplanned maintenance to a planned maintenance programme which reduces life cycle costs and increases customer uptime in rail applications.
Engine Raft Overhaul is involves:
- Teardown, cleaning, component qualification and inspection
- Component sub-assembly
- Dyno testing, final ‘dress’ and painting, along with final inspection
Parts and Consumables
Cummins parts don't just meet your original engine specifications. Cummins incorporate the latest advances in materials, component design and manufacturing techniques. Cummins parts go beyond original specifications, to deliver performance that goes beyond expectations. It's a benefit you only get with Cummins.
Availability of rail parts is as important as their quality. Next to Cummins Europe's own extensive stock, Cummins Distribution Europe is backed by one of the largest Cummins Global Logistics (CGL) parts distribution centres (PDC). Located in Belgium, CGL has access to virtually every part for over 8 million Cummins engines.
